We all know the recession is getting worse. I am hearing about good people - good people - being made redundant.
And now, I have heard that Creatives at one Agency have been put on a 4-day week. Better than redundancies, I suppose, but where will it end? Could we return to the era, last seen when Ted Heath was in power, of the three day week?
And would you go for that... or would you rather take a pay-off and leave?

No son... it's Damon Collins, not Ted Heath.
a four or three day week sounds fine.
but at the moment i do a five day week and often find that becomes a six or seven day week.
the theory of shorter weeks is fine...take fallons friday policy. but it's kind of impractical in the modern world.
It always seems like the creatives are the first to go. Even though most agencies are full to the brim of useless account people.
any good creative worth his salt should be working a 10 day week anyhow. So a 3 day week would be equivalent of a 6 day week.
all advertising employees are lazy. that's why they work in advertising, right?

Which agency has put them on a 4 day week?
I think we should all just give up and move to the Algarve.
No one at our place is doing any work anyway - we're all too busy getting our portfolios ready...
Everyone hates where they work anyway.
Maybe they shouldn't have moaned so much.
I for one am shitting myself as no ones hiring, but then again they never are.
4 day weeks kick ass.
Wrote a comment on a blog on Mon-day.
Wrote a comment on a blog on Tuessssss-day.
We were making ads by Wednesday.
And on Thursday&Friday&Saturday...
They were blow out Sunday.
As long as City keep losing, I'm happy!
Which agency is doing the four day week and what is Fallon's friday policy? I know nothing.
A 20% pay cut in return for a 3-day weekend...? Tempting...
What's Fallon's Friday policy? I thought they worked a 7 day week.
Since the interweb has made everything free anyway we'll soon also be asked to work for free.
The only solution is that eventually communism will take over and we'll all be out growing potatoes, getting them stolen from us and then spending the rest of our lives in a gulag in Sibera.
(Spot who wasn't paying attention in A-Level History.)
In poker, they say there's a sucker at every table, and if you look around you and can't see who it is, then it's you.
Look around your creative department. If you can't tell who the next person that's going to be made redundant is, it's you.
If I was an above the line creative with no digital experience then I'd be very worried. These days you need to skilled in both... or at the very least show a keen interest in the digital area, you either change or die. Simple.
I for one seem to have my best ideas when im out of the office or at the weekend - so a shorter week would surely increase productivity - maybe
I'd get rid of all of 'em before me...
Im just sitting here in my box.
Going off.
please grow some balls and say what agency is that. I mean, in today's circumstances it's not as if someone is going to blame them!
and seriously, what is fallon's friday policy? they all gather and worship Juan?
It's VCCP.
Our policy at Fallon is to play Pro Evolution Soccer until we all get insane head aches and acquire epilepsy. There, happy, now you all know our dirty little secret.
thanks, anonymous.
best regards,
anonymous.
Fallons friday policy is that they all sit around and show each other the youtube clips they've been watching all week.
Then they work out a way to blackmail clients into running them as adverts.
Then they win loads of awards and everyone says "Isn't it amazing".
Can we have the day they don't want?
Our agency has never been busier. Seriously.
Sounds about right that it'd be be VCCP.
Hardly takes a genius 5 days a week to come up with yet another giant bubble bouncing bollox ad for O2.
Why can't we just be allowed to do our jobs without some sword of Damocles hanging over us all the bleedin time? if it's not one thing it's your mother.
if i was a digital creative with no above the line experience i'd be very worried. Because my life had turned out a bit rubbish.
Scamp, a while back you did a post along the lines of 'recession, what recession?' It's moved quick hey?
Advertising was always going to get hit hard, I'm surprised it's taken so long.
re 10am
bravo
What's with all the doom and gloom?
My mortgage has dropped £300 and due to work slowing down, I can spend more times in the disabled loo hunched double over a speeding fist.
This recession stinks!
VCCP: Billings gained: 9.2m
Billings lost: 0
More a question of 6 day weeks. Not 4.
Anonymous at 7.54 pm said it was VCCP, but that’s bollocks. Anyway I hear everyone at the HONDA factory in Swindon are on a forced 6-month sabbatical so well done Wieden and Kennedy .
I can't help noticing the number of wanking references on this blog. Are advertising creatives more interested in wanking than other people? I confess to a fairly high level of interest in wanking myself, but wonder if coming up with ad ideas and masturbation are linked in some way?
Hi Scamp, can you tell us which agency is dropping a day? Please.
@ 2:08
Cheer up. I hear the fast food industry is booming, so you can always apply there. The pay is no doubt better too.
Some agencies get creatives supposedly on a 5 day week, to come in on the weekend anyway. So they can just put people on a three day week and get them to come in all week as usual with the threat of getting made redundant implicit. The result is everyone works just as hard for less money and they can offer a cut price fee to new clients and so "win" loads of new business. The agency will grow really quick and during the next five years make the founders a shit load of money, make some terrible ads and make mugs out of their employees. You know who you are.
Recession, talks on the IRA bombing london again.
Reminds me of the early 90s.
When the ads were good.

Are you suggesting the work W&K have been doing for Honda over the last 7 years is the reason people aren't buying cars? [Rant censored]
Hi Scamp,
why would you censor the rant? It wasn't abusive if I remember right.
It's fair to say your blog is populated by a few really bitter people who can't wait to stick the knife in simply because they are so unhappy about the failure of their own career.
If you allow them the chance to air their views then why not give us the chance to remind them of how pathetic they are?
You remember wrong!
I guess the trick is to annihilate someone's views without assassinating their character.
Oh well, it wasn't supposed to be abusive. Just honest. Can the truth ever be abusive? I thought I was doing a service to the [sorry, you can't say "poor fool" because it's 'personal'. See what I mean?] Never mind.
Nobody's reading this now anyway.
Keep up the good work (but don't censor abusive posts which still make a good point!)
;-)
